Dry eyes in an air-conditioned office can reflect a combination of direct airflow, a dry environment and prolonged screen work. Start by reducing air blowing towards your face and making breaks and complete blinking easier. Persistent symptoms need assessment because AC is not the only possible cause.
The office temperature feels comfortable, yet your eyes start burning before lunch. At home the problem eases. That pattern makes the work environment worth investigating, but it is not proof that the air conditioner is the diagnosis.
Look at the desk, not just the thermostat
Concentrated screen tasks can change blinking. Direct moving air and low humidity can add to ocular-surface discomfort. An outdated prescription, contact lenses, lid problems or established dry-eye disease can coexist. General eye-strain guidance includes attention to air blowing towards the face, lighting and workstation habits. Mayo Clinic eye-strain guidance

What you can change in a shared office
- Identify direct airflow. Notice whether symptoms are worse under a vent or beside a desk fan. Ask facilities staff about safe vent adjustment rather than blocking ventilation yourself.
- Try a different position if possible. Moving your seat or redirecting a personal fan may be more practical than changing the building temperature.
- Make the task readable. Increase text size and reduce reflections so you do not spend the afternoon squinting or leaning towards the screen.
- Interrupt concentrated near work. Look away, change position and use ordinary, gentle complete blinks. Avoid forceful squeezing or rubbing.
- Keep necessary treatment separate from environmental changes. Do not discontinue prescribed eye treatment because the desk feels better.
Do you need a humidifier?
Not automatically. A randomized crossover study of 44 computer users compared one-hour sessions with and without a desktop humidifier. Some measures of tear stability and comfort improved in the humidified condition. The study does not establish a durable cure, an ideal device for every office or a reason to add humidity to an already humid room. Read the primary trial.
If considering a device, check building policy, electrical safety and the manufacturer\’s cleaning instructions. Water reservoirs need proper maintenance. First determine whether dryness is actually a problem; a strong draught and an unsuitable prescription will not necessarily be solved by buying another desk accessory.

When to arrange an examination
Seek assessment for persistent irritation, repeated blurred vision or symptoms that affect work despite sensible changes. A painful red eye, marked light sensitivity or a new reduction in vision needs prompt care. A red eye in a contact-lens wearer deserves urgent assessment rather than simply changing the air conditioning.
Quick answers
Should I turn off AC completely?
Not necessarily. In hot conditions, comfortable and safe cooling matters. Focus first on air blowing directly at the face and on the overall work setup.
Does this mean I need a heated mask?
No. Treatment depends on the cause. Warm compresses may be appropriate for some eyelid-gland problems but are not a universal answer to screen discomfort.
For the wider picture, see our guide to computer vision syndrome. Contact-lens wearers should also discuss their lens fit, wearing schedule and drop compatibility with their clinician.
