“Computer glasses” can mean three different things at the optical counter: lenses with a blue-light filter, lenses with an anti-reflective coating, or a prescription designed for the distance between you and your screen.
A prescription that suits your working distance can be useful. A blue-cut upgrade is not an established treatment for ordinary screen-related eye strain. Ask which feature you are being offered before comparing prices.
Start with the distance, not the coating
Distance glasses, reading glasses and computer glasses do different jobs. Reading material is often closer than a desktop monitor. A lens that is comfortable for a book may be awkward at a screen farther away.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology distinguishes prescription computer glasses from blue-light-blocking glasses. A clinician can assess whether a lens for your actual working distance would help, especially when near focusing becomes more difficult with age.
Measure from your eyes to the screen in your normal sitting position. Bring that distance and your current glasses to the appointment. Mention whether you also need to see papers, another monitor or people across the room. Do not calculate a new prescription yourself by subtracting from a reading number.
What each feature is meant to do
On a narrow screen, scroll the table sideways.| Feature | What you are buying | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Screen-distance prescription | Optical power chosen for a working distance | That every computer user needs a second pair |
| Anti-reflective coating, often called anti-glare | Reduced reflections from lens surfaces | Treatment of dry eye or all causes of headache |
| Blue-cut filter | Reduced transmission of some blue wavelengths | Proven relief from ordinary digital eye strain |
| Photochromic treatment | A lens that changes tint under specified light conditions | A replacement for the correct prescription |
| Hydrophobic coating | A surface treatment intended to help repel water | An eye-health treatment |
Products can combine several features. Ask for them to be itemised. A demonstration showing less reflected light or a blocked blue beam is a demonstration of an optical property, not proof that your symptoms will improve.
For the physical properties, ZEISS describes anti-reflective coatings and water-repellent top coats separately from its light-reactive photochromic lenses. These manufacturer descriptions explain what the features do; their marketing claims do not establish relief of eye strain. Ask about tint behaviour, care and warranty for the exact lens offered locally.
What the blue-light research found
The 2023 Cochrane review included 17 studies and 619 participants. It found that blue-light-filtering lenses may offer no short-term advantage for computer-related visual fatigue over lenses without that filter.
Sleep findings were uncertain. The included studies did not establish protection of the macula. The review searched evidence through March 2022, so it should not be described as a trial of every lens now sold.
This also does not mean a person who feels better in new glasses imagined the improvement. The prescription, fit, reflections or work habits may have changed at the same time. Improvement alone does not identify which feature helped.
Check the desk before paying for an upgrade
Make text large enough to read without leaning forwards. Move a bright window or lamp out of the screen's reflection, use comfortable room lighting, and take breaks from continuous near work. Blink deliberately when concentrating.
For persistent symptoms, consider the whole problem: prescription, focusing, eye surface and workstation. Our computer vision syndrome guide covers that wider assessment. If progressive lenses make you lift your chin to see the monitor, read the progressive-glasses and neck-pain guide.
A screen-distance pair may blur objects farther away. Ask which activities it suits; do not assume it is suitable for driving.
A useful question at the counter
Ask: “Which problem is this feature expected to solve for me, and can I buy the same prescription without that upgrade?” Compare like-for-like lenses, including coating care and warranty terms.
If the main concern is sleep, our night-mode guide addresses evening light separately. A lens purchase cannot replace enough sleep or an assessment of persistent eye discomfort.
